I’m Here For You…

I Wanna Be Healthy
This Is The BLOG You’ve Been Looking For!!!!

As a blogger, I want to take the vast knowledge I have gained about health and medicine over the past 14 years and pass it on to you. I also want to continue to grow as a person and a professional.

Most importantly though I want to take you on my journey to better health so I can tell you about what I’ve found and how it can help us both. I want you to obtain the best possible health that you can.

I believe and hope that you will continue to come to our site and read our blog posts. I will be doing thorough research on many health and fitness related topics. Topics such as cardiac health, diseases of the brain including Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Also, we will provide teaching and insight into hypertension, diabetes, and obesity. Three of the leading causes of sickness and death in our country today.

I am passionate about being healthy and fit and I want you to be that way too. I will also be giving you actionable tips that you can put to good use. Tips like recipes, exercises, diets, how-to lists, and many other useful bits of information to help you along your way.

I am writing this blog for all the people that want to be healthier. Not only for themselves but for their families as well. Our health is the most precious thing we own. It is something that we have control over.

We can either let it get worse and worse over time as we get older. Or we can fight every day for the health that we know we deserve and that we are willing to take responsibility for and obtain our health.

About Little Ole Me

Let me tell you about myself. As stated above, my name is Scott St. James. I’m originally from Saginaw, MI but I have lived in many different places since I was 21. I’ve been a Registered Nurse for over 14 years and a Nurse Practitioner for over 2 years.

I am certified as an Adult/Gerontological Nurse Practitioner. I have most of my RN experience in the Intensive Care Unit and the Emergency Department.

I will tell you my story about why I’m so passionate about being healthy. I have a brother that is 16 months older than I am. He was always great at sports and I wasn’t! So in order to try and be like him, I started working out and eating healthy when I was 15.

That lasted throughout my teenage years until I was 21. By the way, I became healthier but not better at sports.

When I was 21, my first child, Christian, was born. It became increasingly difficult to stick to a workout routine or to prepare healthy meals. All of our time was spent caring for Christian as you can imagine. To make things worse the poor kid had a terrible case of colic.

So sleeping, working out, and eating healthy all went to the wayside. It was just easier to get fast food, take-out, or to just grab whatever was handy at dinner time.  Then I joined the U.S. Air Force.

U.S. Air Force

I Wanna Be Healthy
Join The U.S. Air Force!

I proudly joined the U.S. Air Force. I was able to see some beautiful places during my eight years in the service.

I was stationed in Ramstein Germany for 3 years, Minot, ND for 2 years, and Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, AK. The rest of my time was spent at basic training, being TDY, or deployed to Saudi Arabia.

Christian was born the first year I joined the Air Force. When he was 7 months old we had been sent to Ramstein Air Force Base. By the time Christian was about a year old I had already put on some weight and had developed some rather bad eating habits.

The Air Force did little to keep me in shape. I had a mostly outdoor job but it was not very physically demanding.

So for eight years in the Air Force, my weight went up and down. The only time I was really fit was when I was sent to Saudi Arabia for 114 days. I wouldn’t want to do that again but I’m glad I volunteered for the assignment.

Over there we worked six days a week and worked out six days a week. We only had one down day a week and nobody wanted to do anything on those days except relax and try to catch up with family.

Upon my return to Germany, I slowly fell back into my old bad habits. I lost most of the muscle I had gained and even started to put the weight back on.

My weight continued to go up and down. It would go up and down because every few months I would get tired of being overweight and set my mind to lose the weight. Which at that time I could do fairly easily.

Fast forward to August 1999. I was honorably discharged from the Air Force. I lived in Colorado for about three months and after my divorce, I moved back to Michigan.

Back In Michigan

I Wanna Be Healthy
Detroit, MI

In January of 2000, I started driving a truck back and forth from Detroit to Janesville, WI. That was a terrible job for someone that wanted to be active. I believe truck drivers hold an important place in our society. It just was not for me.

In 2001 I started taking pre-requisite courses at my local community college. I knew I wanted to be a nurse but there was a bit of a waiting list but I couldn’t get into the nursing program until I had completed all my prereqs.

At about the same time I was getting ready to finally start the nursing program my Dad, “pops” as I refer to him saw an ad in the paper. Yes, the newspaper.

It stated that if you were unemployed or underemployed the State of Michigan would help you pay for classes in certain fields of study. Thankfully nursing was one of them.

So thanks to that program I was able to have my first degree paid for by the State of Michigan. For the other two, I have had to take out loans or pay for them myself. Such is life.

Nurse Practitioner In Mississippi

I Wanna Be Healthy
I Love Being A Nurse Practitioner!

As for my Nurse Practitioner experience, all of that has been gained through working with the Hospitalist Program at two different Hospitals. If you don’t know what a Hospitalist I will tell you. Basically, a Hospitalist is a doctor that works in the hospital instead of having his or her own office in which to practice.

I’ve always been interested in being a nurse. My grandmother was a certified nursing assistant and two of my aunts were registered nurses. Also, one of my sisters is a certified nursing assistant and the other two are nurses. One is a registered nurse and the other is a licensed practical nurse.

As I mentioned earlier, I have lived in a lot of different places since the age of 21. That is due to the fact that I proudly joined the U.S.

A little more about myself. I am married to a wonderful lady named Dolores. Between us, we have 5 children and 10 grandchildren. I also have 2 brothers. All of my siblings live in Michigan still with their children and extended families.

I moved to Mississippi because that’s where my wife was living at the time so I decided it was easier for me to move here than it was for Dolores to move to Michigan.

Please tell me what you’d like to read about on this bog.  Or, tell me a current problem you are having that I can help you solve.
